Dallas LIFE began in 1949 when Reverend Robert J. Key, seeing the growing homeless population in Dallas, founded the Dallas Rescue Mission. Starting in a small storefront in 1954, the Mission offered shelter and spiritual guidance to 25 men each night. Under the leadership of Reverend James Starkes in 1979, the Mission expanded to serve more people, including women and children, and became known for its comprehensive recovery and support programs. In 1981, it was renamed Dallas LIFE and moved to a larger facility, allowing it to house up to 500 residents. Today, Dallas LIFE is a thriving independent non-profit, continuing its mission to provide help and hope to the homeless.
